First of all, your boss was in the right for what they did. You were in the middle of serving a customer so you should not have even touched your phone. And your boss is right, at 27 you should know better… You should only have checked your phone once you were finished serving the customer, and only if there were no other customers waiting to be served, no excuses.

If you have to work and are waiting on an important call, you should give the person you are waiting on the call from your work number so they can call that number to speak to you and let your boss know you are expecting an important call – this is only to be done for emergencies though. If you’re job requires you to serve customers, that is your priority while you are at work, not your phone…

Oh and about chewing gum, if you work in any type of customer service role, like you do, there is NO excuse for chewing gum while you are on duty at work – especially when dealing with customers. Its highly unprofessional – as is checking your phone while dealing with a customer even if they did not see you do it..
